The portrait shows its subject in right profile, cropped at the half-length, a pose that was a favorite for formal likenesses for much of the 1700s and 1800s. The caption identifies her only as Mrs. William Cushing and records no date, so her own given name, her husband's exact identity, and the year of the image cannot be confirmed from the record alone. A profile view like this was often chosen to show the outline of the face and the costume clearly, and it is worth looking at the hairstyle and dress for clues to the period.
