Woodrow Wilson, who had led the country through the last year of World War I, appears in the album that holds this 1922 print, which is dated November 11, the anniversary of the 1918 armistice. By 1922 Wilson was a former president, living in retirement in Washington, and the caption card's tags point to both his role and the wartime holiday. Armistice Day was then a time for remembrance, with parades, ceremonies, and moments of silence held across the country. The National Photo Company, which made the picture, worked as a commercial news and portrait studio of the era, so the image reflects how such events were recorded for public audiences.
