The phrase "All in the day's work" sets this print apart from the more dramatic calls to arms on the board, presenting military service as an ordinary duty rather than a crisis. Its plain instruction to "Enlist in the United States" places it among the recruiting posters that circulated during World War I, when printed notices were pasted in post offices, storefronts and train stations to fill rapidly expanding ranks. Designers of such posters often relied on familiar scenes and patriotic symbols so that joining up would seem routine and respectable to a broad public.
