The poster's central claim is that saving a life through prompt medical care "is a blow struck at the heart of the enemy," so a donation to the Canadian Red Cross becomes a form of war effort. Printed in 1915, when Canada had committed large numbers of troops to the Western Front, it appealed to civilians at home to fund hospital supplies, ambulance work and other relief for the wounded. Posters like this one were a common tool of wartime fundraising, which ties the image to the broader question of how nations financed their war efforts beyond the battlefield.
