Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley west of Boston, opened in 1875 as a women's college founded by Henry and Pauline Durant, who wanted young women to receive a rigorous education comparable to what men could get at Harvard or Yale. By the time this parlor was in use, the campus on the shore of Lake Waban was known across New England as a serious center of study for women. Rooms like this one, with their arched openings and light wicker chairs, gave faculty a place to meet students, receive guests, and conduct the college's business away from the classrooms. The main building, College Hall, was destroyed by fire in 1914, and the rebuilding that followed showed how much the school had grown beyond its first structures.
