This Catalan-language poster warns farmers against selling their produce on the "free" market, and its subjects of wolves and children make the message hard to miss. Issued by the Dirección General de Agricultura during the Spanish Civil War, it dates from the period when Republican authorities in Catalonia were encouraging farms and workers to organize into collectives. Officials wanted food to reach the cities and the front through those collectives rather than through private dealers, who often charged higher prices and fed a black market. The lithograph shows how wartime posters used simple, emotional imagery to shape everyday economic choices.
