Few posters from the Spanish Civil War pay tribute to foreign volunteers, which sets this one apart. Its title honors the International Brigades, volunteer units of men from more than fifty countries who joined the Spanish Republic's Popular Army after the war began in July 1936. The brigades fought in major battles such as Jarama and Brunete before they were withdrawn in 1938. The flags and the flame in the design signal solidarity across national lines, a message printed in Madrid during the war.
