Its slogan, "The people in arms defended the republic against the traitors," pairs domestic betrayal with foreign invasion in a way that speaks directly to the Republic's situation in 1938. The poster was printed that year by the Juventudes Socialistas Unificadas, a youth federation formed in 1936 from socialist and communist groups. By then the Republic was fighting Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces, which had received German and Italian military support, and the image of a strong, disciplined Popular Army was meant to rally young Republicans to that fight.
