*Cataluña vencio al fascismo en 24 horas* ("Catalonia defeated fascism in 24 hours") claims a quick victory from the first days of the Spanish Civil War. The military uprising led by Franco began on July 17 and 18, 1936, and in Barcelona, armed workers, loyal police, and Civil Guard units blocked the rebels by July 19. The Esquerra Republicana de Cataluña, a Catalan republican party, issued this offset lithograph in 1936 to rally support for the Republic. The poster's bold claim reflects the propaganda of that moment, when the outcome in Catalonia was still uncertain to many outside the city.
