Few posters on this board pair a dove with a gas mask, and the record lists both among its subjects. The slogan, roughly "Ambitions, militarism, war. This is fascism. Destroy it by joining your effort to that of others," was issued by the CNT and FAI, the anarchist labor federation and its militant affiliate, in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War. The gas mask reflects fears of chemical attack from the air, fears sharpened by Italy's use of poison gas in Ethiopia in 1935 and 1936 and by bombing in Spain itself. The lithograph is dated only to between 1936 and 1939, but its call to unite against fascism shows how the anarchist movement tried to rally workers against Franco's rebellion.
