The inscription after Franklin's name, "L.L.D. F.R.S.," records two honors that set this portrait apart: a doctorate of laws from the University of St. Andrews and membership in the Royal Society, the London scientific academy. The print is a mezzotint in which Edward Fisher engraved a painting by Mason Chamberlin, a London portraitist. Franklin sat for such likenesses while serving as a colonial agent in London in the 1760s, when his reputation as a scientist and writer was spreading through Britain and Europe. The "proofs before letters" category suggests this impression was pulled before the title and credits were engraved on the plate.
