Benjamin Franklin is shown here with the title "LL.D F.R.S.," the honorary law degree and Fellow of the Royal Society that he earned in the 1700s, a reminder that he was as celebrated abroad for his scientific work as for his politics. The inscription places him "of Philadelphia," the city where he printed, published and organized civic projects before the Revolution. Portraits of Franklin were widely engraved and sold in Europe and America, and the learned titles printed beneath them helped establish his reputation among scholars and diplomats. Franklin later served as a diplomat in France, where his image became especially popular.
