Lafayette's 1784 departure from Mount Vernon stands apart from the battle scenes around it, recording a parting rather than a clash of armies. The Marquis de Lafayette had served as a young major general under Washington, and his role at Yorktown in 1781 made him a hero on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1784 he toured the newly independent states, visited Washington's home, and then sailed back to France. Scenes like this one capture the personal bonds that outlasted the war and remind viewers that the Revolution was also built on lasting friendships.
