The name on this negative, "Geo. H. Kendall," comes from a caption card or notation that the Bain News Service wrote on the plate, and the Library of Congress has not confirmed it, so the sitter's identity and the occasion remain uncertain. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899 that sold photographs of news events, public figures, and everyday scenes to newspapers. Its glass negatives, many of them made in the early twentieth century, form a large part of the Bain Collection, and researchers often rely on the agency's handwritten notes to date and identify individual plates.
