George Grossmith was a British comic performer, writer and entertainer, and this glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds the work of the Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency that sent photographs to newspapers from about 1900 into the 1920s. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Grossmith was best known for his light comic operettas and monologues on the London stage, and his name was familiar to American audiences through touring and reviews. The Bain files are worth noticing for their quick, working-press character, made to be reproduced in newspapers rather than kept as fine art.
