Unlike many pictures on this board, this glass negative names no place, person, or event. Its title is only the photographer's name, taken from the negative or its caption card, so the record does not show what it depicts. George Grantham Bain founded the Bain News Service in New York in 1899, selling photographs of current events, public figures, and everyday scenes to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Glass plates of this size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were a common working medium of that era. Because the titles were assigned later from surviving notes, the subject of this particular image remains uncertain.
