What sets this picture apart is its title, "After Buffalo," which places the scene at the end of a hunt rather than in the middle of the chase. Three riders with spears pursue bison across open ground, a method of hunting that Plains peoples had practiced on horseback for generations after acquiring horses. By around 1904, when this image was made, commercial hunting had reduced the bison from tens of millions to a few hundred animals, so a view like this one now records a practice that had largely ended. The record does not name the photographer, so its making and purpose remain uncertain.
