A Marine mascot is the subject of this glass negative from December 1923, made by the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded much of the city's public life in the early twentieth century. Football mascots of that era were often animals or costumed figures who rallied crowds and gave a team an identity. The date comes from a related negative, and the title is unverified, so the exact occasion is unclear. Streaks and blemishes on the plate are typical of glass negatives, whose coatings deteriorated with age.
