A Marine mascot is the detail that sets this view apart from the other football pictures on the board. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., documented news and public events in the 1910s and 1920s, and this December 1923 date places the scene in the late-autumn football season, when service and college teams often brought animal mascots onto the field. The title comes from a note added by the company and has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Faint streaks on the glass plate reflect natural deterioration of its original coating.
