Few pictures on this board capture a service-team rivalry as directly as this one, a football game between the Marines and the Army dated December 1, 1923. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. firm that documented the city's news and public life in the early twentieth century, made the negative, which Herbert A. French donated in 1947. Glass negatives like this were common in press photography of the period, and this one shows the streaks and blemishes that develop as the original coatings deteriorate with age.
