This glass negative records a football game between Marine Corps and Army teams, dated December 1, 1923, though the title comes from unverified notes that the National Photo Company wrote on the negative sleeve. The company, a Washington, D.C., commercial firm, photographed many local sporting events and civic occasions in the 1910s and 1920s, and its plates give a sense of how crowds and players were captured before action photography became routine. The image shows the blemishes typical of aging glass plates, including streaks where the original coating has deteriorated. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
