This glass negative records a football game between Marine and Army teams, dated December 1, 1923, though the title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, photographing public events, sports, and daily life, so the picture fits that broader record of the capital's community. Collegiate and service-academy football drew large crowds in the 1920s, and the glass plate itself shows the streaks and blemishes that come from age and deterioration of its original coating.
