Puck's September 19, 1900 centerfold, "Another explosion at hand," treats the presidential race as a string of political blasts, with William Jennings Bryan and William McKinley caught in the fallout of the debate over American imperialism. Joseph Keppler, the Austrian-born founder of Puck, drew the color lithograph during a campaign shaped by the Philippines and the Spanish-American War. Bryan, the Democratic nominee, made opposition to annexing the Philippines a central theme, while McKinley, the Republican incumbent, defended the expansion. The cartoon condenses that complicated policy fight into one dramatic scene.
