The caption ties this glass negative to the Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C., though the title "Stationary" is unverified and its meaning is unclear. Completed in 1909, the building was one of the first erected specifically to house senators' offices, and by the late 1930s it was a familiar presence on Capitol Hill. Harris & Ewing, the Washington studio behind this collection, recorded government buildings, officials and daily city life for decades, leaving a dense picture of the capital between the wars.
