A balloonist standing in a wicker basket, shown in an engraving, is paired here with a handwritten letter signed by Nadar, the French photographer and aeronaut Gaspard-Félix Tournachon. Nadar took some of the earliest aerial photographs from a tethered balloon over Paris in 1858, and in 1863 he built Le Géant, a very large balloon that carried passengers across France. Ballooning drew wide public enthusiasm in 19th-century France, and the combination of an engraved scene with a personal signature links the printed image to one of the period's best-known figures in the field.
