Few images of early ballooning capture the crew as directly as this one, with Oscar Erbslöh standing in the wicker basket and gripping the ropes. Erbslöh was a German aeronaut who competed in the international balloon races of the early 1900s. He died in 1910 after a crash during the Gordon Bennett Cup, which that year was held in the United States, in St. Louis. Pictures like this one show how much of a pilot's work happened by hand, managing lines, ballast and the basket's balance as the gas envelope pulled overhead.
