This portrait shows Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, the self-taught aeronaut who ran the Union Army's balloon service during the Civil War. The record dates the print only to the war years, so the exact sitting date remains uncertain. Lowe's hydrogen balloons gave Union commanders a rare view of Confederate positions, and his ground crews used telegraph wire to send observations down to headquarters. The image is a useful reminder that military aviation began with men like Lowe, who were as much showmen and inventors as soldiers.
