This engraving shows Prof. T. Lowe, the civilian aeronaut, rising in a balloon on a reconnaissance flight over Vienna, Virginia, a village in the northern part of the state close to the Union lines in 1861. Lowe offered his balloons to the Union army that year, and his aerial observations were among the first attempts to use flight for military intelligence. The wood engraving appeared in *Harper's Weekly*, a popular illustrated newspaper that relied on engravings like this one to show readers events they could not see for themselves.
