A horse-drawn hay wagon sits at the center of this engraving, with its team and the figures working around it marking the scene as a harvest rather than a generic rural view. Harvest-home imagery like this was popular in nineteenth-century illustrated magazines and almanacs, where artists used such scenes to celebrate the close of the growing season and the communal labor that brought in the crop. Hay was loaded by hand and hauled from field to barn, so the wagon and its load stand for the physical work that tied the rural calendar to later autumn festivities such as Thanksgiving. Look closely at the cross-hatching in the sky and the foliage, which shows how engravers built tone with fine lines.
