Harvest work and a quiet afternoon by the water share this scene: a haying crew is at work in the fields while children have wandered down to a stream to fish. That pairing of labor and leisure was common on farms in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when every able hand helped bring in the hay before autumn rains, and children were often given small chores or a few free hours by the creek. Pictures like this one were popular as seasonal scenes of rural life, and in a gallery grouped under harvest and Thanksgiving they read as a reminder of the autumn work that kept farm households fed through winter.
