Margaret Woffington, the Dublin-born actress who died in 1760, is the sitter here. The record links the image to a painting by William Hogarth, though that attribution is marked as unverified. Woffington was one of the leading performers of her day, moving between Dublin, Covent Garden and Drury Lane and earning praise in both comic and tragic roles. Hogarth painted her more than once, and his portraits remain among the best-known likenesses of an eighteenth-century stage star. This halftone reproduction is worth noticing for how it carried her likeness to viewers who would never see the original canvas.
