Seen from the north, this relief map shows the battlefield as a sculpted landscape, with the ridges and hills that shaped the fighting rising in three dimensions. Its southward view takes in the high ground south of town, where Union and Confederate forces clashed over the first three days of July 1863. Such models were built to help viewers grasp terrain that is hard to read from ground level, and they remain one of the clearest ways to see why positions like Cemetery Ridge and the rocky hills to the south mattered so much.
