The view looks across the south side of the Executive Mansion, where the conservatory and its enclosed court were added during alterations commissioned by Mrs. Benjamin Harrison. Architect F.D. Owen prepared the plans for the work carried out in the early 1890s, when First Lady Caroline Harrison was also championing the house's interiors, including the collection of White House china she helped gather. The drawing-style title and the albumen print medium suggest a presentation view of the design, made to show how the glass-roofed addition would sit against the existing building. Its survival in the Owen family's collection makes it a useful record of how the President's House was reshaped during the Harrison years.
