The title names a specific project: alterations to the Executive Mansion made for Mrs. Benjamin Harrison, shown from the south with the conservatory and court in view. Frederick D. Owen, the architect credited on the drawing, prepared plans for the work during Benjamin Harrison's presidency in the early 1890s, when the first lady, Caroline Harrison, was seeking to modernize and expand the residence. This albumen print reproduces the design, so it records the intended appearance of the greenhouse and courtyard rather than the finished building. It is a useful view for comparing the proposed plan with the White House as it was later remodeled.
