The name Madam Barand Barendse comes from unverified data the National Photo Company placed on the negative or its sleeve, so it is best read as a working label. The plate is an 8 by 6 inch glass negative, dated to about 1919 or 1920 from others in the same range. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, producing a large body of portraits and scenes of city life, and Herbert A. French gave this plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look for streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings on glass plates of this age.
