The sleeve for this glass negative labels the rider only as "Gen.," so the officer and his horse remain unidentified, and the title comes from a Civil War caption book rather than a name. Made in 1862 by the photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, it uses the wet collodion process, which demanded that the plate be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried. Those constraints meant that camp and mounted portraits of commanders were often staged with care, with the horse standing still for a long exposure. The picture is a useful document of how Union officers presented themselves in the early war years.
