A condemned man faces the garrote in this stereograph from Bilibid Prison in Manila, captioned "Paying the death penalty for crime." The garrote was a Spanish method of execution in which a metal collar was tightened around the neck, and it stayed in use in the Philippines after the United States took control in 1898. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm, sold stereo cards like this one to American viewers curious about their new overseas territories. The catalog date of about 1901 is unverified, so the card is best read as a record of how the scene was presented to the public as much as a documentary account of the event.
