This print is titled "Battle of Paceo" and records the fighting in Manila's Paco district on February 4 and 5, 1899, when Filipino and American forces first clashed in the city. The fighting came just after the Treaty of Paris was signed, and it marked the start of the Philippine-American War. The shelflist card gives no date, so the dates come from the title, and it names Kurz & Allison, a Chicago firm known for illustrated war views, as an associated name, though that attribution is unverified. Prints like this were sold to American audiences eager for images of distant events, and they often mixed battlefield reporting with dramatic composition.
