The particular subject here is the attack on Brookfield, a small settlement in central Massachusetts, which the caption card places in 1675 during King Philip's War. That conflict pitted New England colonists against a coalition of Native nations led by Metacom, known to the English as King Philip, and Brookfield was one of many frontier towns hit that summer. Because the card gives no date and the record is unverified, treat the year as provisional. As an engraving reproduced in the book *American Scenes*, the image reflects a later artist's interpretation of the event rather than an eyewitness view, so its details are worth reading as period imagination as much as documentation.
