A color woodcut of geishas giving a concert, this print shows musicians playing the shamisen, a three-stringed lute closely tied to entertainment districts in Edo-period Japan. It is a page from a book called *Kakuchū enpu*, which catalogers date no earlier than 1806, while the image itself is dated 1803 in the Library of Congress record. Prints like this belong to the ukiyo-e tradition, the "floating world" of theaters, teahouses, and pleasure quarters, where music was a prized social skill. Look closely at the patterned robes and the spare lines, which suggest the rhythm of a private performance.
