A geisha steps toward a boat while a boatman waits to take her across the water, in this two-page color woodcut. The book it comes from, *Kakuchū enpu*, is generally placed after 1806, though the picture itself is dated 1803 in a 2001 exhibition catalog. Boats and waterways were a familiar part of life in Edo, and printmakers in the ukiyo-e, or "floating world," tradition often used such scenes to show entertainers moving through the city's pleasure districts. Library staff supplied the title, which describes the scene.
