The poster's caption singles out The Brothers Lowell, the act that anchors this 1899 advertisement for Phil Sheridan's New City Sports Company. Sheridan, listed as proprietor and manager, ran a touring company in the late 1890s, when American variety and burlesque troupes relied on bold color lithographs to draw crowds in each town they played. The print was made by the U.S. Printing Co. of Cincinnati and New York, with the Russell-Morgan Print name also appearing, and firms like these produced many of the large, vivid theater posters that still survive from the period. Its size, roughly 71 by 106 centimeters, reflects how such posters were meant to be pasted up on city streets and billboards.
