This large color lithograph advertises the Royal Japanese Troupe, whose acrobats and aerialists were a popular attraction on American variety and circus stages in the early 1890s. The poster was printed in 1892 by the United States Printing Company for Russell & Morgan, a Cincinnati firm that produced many theatrical posters of the period. Its size and bold color were meant to catch the eye of passersby, and its imagery reflects the era's fascination with Japan and the exotic promotional style common to touring entertainment of the time.
