This daguerreotype shows the bronze statue of DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor who championed the Erie Canal, set among the monuments of Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. The sculptor, Henry Kirke Brown, was one of the leading American sculptors of the mid-nineteenth century, and his portrait statues of public men were often placed in cemeteries and city parks. The photographer is unidentified, and the plate was dated only to the years between 1851 and 1860, when daguerreotypes still competed with paper prints. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1934 gift from Henry K. Bush-Brown, a sculptor and relative of Brown.
