The scene shows the young George Washington confessing to his father that he has cut down a cherry tree, the story that gave the print its title. Mason Locke Weems included the anecdote in his popular early biography of the first president, and historians generally treat it as a legend rather than a documented event. George G. White designed the picture, and John C. McRae engraved it around 1889 for Joseph Laing, whose imprints in London, Edinburgh and New York show how widely the tale circulated. Its lesson about honesty made it a familiar subject in schoolbooks and family prints.
