Its title, *Statute Hall, or The Modern Register Office*, sets up a pun on a grand public building and an office where records were kept. The engraving is credited to M. Darly, a London printseller and caricaturist who produced many satirical plates in the 1760s and 1770s, when such prints were a popular way to mock fashions, officials and social pretensions. Because the catalog details come from an unverified caption card, the precise target of the joke is best read from the image and its inscriptions.
