Unlike a straight portrait, this print is a photomontage, a constructed image built from separate photographic elements and assembled into one composition of Theodore Roosevelt. Its copyright entry dates it to 1908, when Roosevelt was nearing the end of his second term and had already said he would not seek another. The print was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that produced large numbers of stereographs and photographs for popular sale, and it reflects the period's appetite for images of the president. The record offers little beyond these basics, so the piece is best read as evidence of how Roosevelt's public image was made and circulated.
