Theodore Roosevelt is shown on Pennsylvania Avenue, the broad boulevard that links the White House with the Capitol and has served as the stage for presidential inaugural parades since the 1800s. Roosevelt, who took office in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley and served until 1909, was known for an energetic public style that suited a city street full of onlookers and motorcars. The avenue in his era was a working thoroughfare of horse-drawn carriages, trolleys and pedestrians, so a picture of him there captures the mix of ceremony and everyday city life of the early twentieth century.
