Saratoga in 1912 is recorded only by its title and the Bain News Service caption, so this glass negative is best understood through the collection it came from. George Grantham Bain's agency supplied newspapers across the country with photographs of current events, and its negatives were shot quickly for daily publication rather than for display as art. The record does not say which Saratoga site is shown, though the town, long known for its mineral springs, racetrack and resort hotels, drew many visitors in the early twentieth century. Bain's glass plates, now held by the Library of Congress, remain a useful record of how American places looked in that period.
