A modern college scull" sets up a pun: the print turns a rowing boat into a joke about academic honors, with "graduating with all the honors" suggesting both a diploma and the prizes a student might win on the water. Thomas Worth, a caricaturist who drew many comic sheets for the New York firm Currier & Ives, signed the design, and the firm published it around 1876. Such prints mocked college life at a time when competitive rowing had become a popular student pastime, following the first Harvard-Yale race in 1852. Worth's treatment shows how collegiate sport was turned into everyday humor for a broad buying public.
